Originally meant to serve as a memorial, 1619 Broadway was purchased by the Brill Brothers in 1932. Music giants like Marvin Hamlisch, Carol King and Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and Liza Minelli rented offices in the building, giving rise to the nickname "Brill Building Sound."
